Carl Hårleman (1700–1753)

Carl HårlemanBaron Carl Hårleman was perhaps the most remarkable Swedish architect of his time. He studied architecture in the Royal French Academy of Architecture as well as in Italy. Once he returned to Sweden, he soon gained respect. Hårleman’s works include the interior design of the Royal Palace in Stockholm as well as the restoration of the Uppsala Cathedral.

Hårleman’s most remarkable work in Suomenlinna is the King's Gate, often described as the most handsome gate building in Finland. The officers’ housing block, known as ‘Noah’s Ark’ and designed by Ehrensvärd, represents Hårleman’s architecture.  It is likely that Hårleman also helped Ehrensvärd in other ways, but there is no clear idea about this.
