Cleaning and maintenance

The cleaning and maintenance organised by the Technical Property manager of the Governing Body of Suomenlinna requires special expertise and knowledge of local conditions. The maintenance team is responsible for the upkeep of the heating, water and electricity distribution systems of the fortress.

The maintenance staff are also responsible for ensuring correct operation of the seepage pumps in the underwater service tunnel to the city.

The work of the Property unit includes operating the lock gates of the historic docks at the annual dockings. The docks are leased to the Viaporin telakka association for restoration and winter storage of traditional and metal-hulled vessels. The Property unit is also responsible for maintaining the piers and equipment in the guest harbour.

Cleaning the old and restored surfaces of the fortress requires expertise. More than half a million visitors come to Suomenlinna during the summer season, which greatly increases the workload of cleaning staff.
