Suomenlinna consists of eight islands with a total area of 80 hectares.  The water area surrounding the islands is also part of Suomenlinna. The water surface area covers 80 hectares.

The landowner of the area is the state, and the area is managed by the Governing Body of Suomenlinna under the Ministry of Education. The area is a district of the City of Helsinki.
