Self-guided

The blue route is an ideal way to explore the fortress when the Visitor Centre is closed. The information boards along the route provide details on various places of interest.

CannonThe main route runs across Suomenlinna from north to south. All main sights are situated along this route, which starts at the main pier in front of the Jetty Barracks and ends at the King’s Gate. Print the map of the blue route from here.

Helsinki on foot brochureBefore heading for Suomenlinna, you can also pick up the Helsinki On Foot brochure from the Helsinki City Tourist & Convention Bureau at Pohjoisesplanadi 19. The brochure is also available at the Visitor Centre. Pages 32 to 35 describe the main sights of the Suomenlinna maritime fortress.

The brochure also includes information on the history of the 450-year-old city of Helsinki and provides interesting facts on its various districts, including Katajanokka, Töölönlahti and Kallio.

Did you know?

As well as being one of the most popular sights in Finland, Suomenlinna is also a Helsinki City district in its own right. A total of 850 people live in the renovated defensive walls and barracks on the islands.
